E-RECIKLAZA was established in 2010 and has become the largest EE waste recycling company in the Balkans. The company’s main activity is the recycling of electrical and electronic waste. EE waste is very dangerous for the environment and can cause serious health damage. Components recycled by E-RECIKLAZA contain heavy metals such as iron, aluminium, copper, and other hazardous substances. The company bases its operation on innovative German technology that ensures safe removal of hazardous substances from refrigeration devices. We have ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 certificates and the CE mark for our complete plant as part of TUV standardisation. E-RECIKLAZA uses the best available technology for recycling all types of EE waste in the region. We recycle about 15,000 tons of EE waste per year – with 200 workers, 3 branches, 10 own companies, 70 different collection points, and 3000 associates.

COMPANY DEVELOPMENT AND ENTREPRENEURIAL STORY
E-RECIKLAZA d.o.o. Nis is among a handful of private companies in Serbia that have started promoting and implementing the concept of circular economy. The forerunner of E-RECIKLAZA is the Jugo-Impex company which deals in the processing of non-ferrous metals. At the outset E-RECIKLAZA had 10 employees and some of them still work for the company. Over time the economic environment has changed and we’ve invested in infrastructure. 2012 was momentous for E-RECIKLAZA due to significant investments. Investments were made in new equipment and in reconstruction of the building on our site in Nis. Ministry of Energy Development and Environmental Protection has granted E-RECIKLAZA the “integrated permit” valid for operations on the national level and covering collection, transport, storage, and treatment of EE waste. SIEPA also supported E-RECIKLAZA in 2012 so the company was able to offer 100 long term jobs. Today it employs over 200 workers. E-RECIKLAZA currently has 11,000m2 of business and production space and 5,000m2 of warehouses. E-RECIKLAZA has gained international experience in waste management worldwide, and over the last 10 years it has been exporting recycled EE waste to Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Poland, and Bulgaria.
CONTRIBUTION TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
E-RECIKLAZA has learned that freon, as a cooling fluid, can be found not only in cooling devices but more so in the insulating layer of PUR foam (polyurethane). PUR powder (a residue from the treatment of EE waste) had previously no use, and was passed on for further disposal. By processing PUR powder, a new product was created called PUR Foam Absorbent. Consequently PUR powder has lost its end-of-waste status. It is used insted to make polyurethane powder, a material with pronounced absorption properties. Further processing changes the powder’s physical form – from dust to granules. This emphasises PUR powder’s ability to act as an absorbent, especially for motor and hydraulic oils. A project (carried out by E-RECIKLAZA’s experts) estimates about 1000 tons of processed PUR powder will be made annually. E-RECIKLAZA has today more than one positive environmental effect. Not only that it protects the environment and human health by recycling EE waste, but much more widely it reduces the emission of harmful gases. In this way, the company has positive impact on the climate change (by reducing the greenhouse effect). Freon is a greenhouse gas that causes pollution. It is not “directly harmful” to human health but damages the ozone layer and indirectly causes ever more malignant skin diseases and triggers other health issues for adults and children. Just three seconds of improper refrigerant recycling causes as much ozone damage as one car’s exhaust in a year.
